This morning I found myself deep in thought about impostor syndrome. It’s something that touches nearly all of us. That creeping feeling of not belonging, of being inadequate, of being found out.
At its root, impostor syndrome is a tangle of fear and shame. It’s often not just about a skill gap or a mistake. It goes deeper. Into the parts of ourselves we’ve tucked away, hidden from view. Parts we’ve labelled not good enough, too much, or not allowed.
Weakness Alchemy
This is where the idea of Weakness Alchemy comes in.
Imagine an archaeological dig. You’re on hands and knees, brushing away dirt to uncover what lies beneath. The pieces you unearth aren’t relics of failure; they’re clues. Exhibits. Items to be examined, understood, and transformed.
Weakness Alchemy is the process of bringing what’s been hidden into the light. Instead of allowing those internal critical voices to rule from the shadows, we invite them out. Lay them on the table. Name them. Understand them.
And when you do that, you’ll notice something beautiful: those harsh internal beliefs fall into two categories:
Growth Gaps – the things you believe you’re lacking:
Growth Gaps are opportunities. Maybe you feel you’re not strategic enough. Not assertive enough. These gaps can be softened with compassion. You can build a plan to grow, or you can acknowledge your value regardless, and bring in support where needed. Either way, the shame loses its sting.
Double-Edged Swords – traits you criticise but secretly value.
Double-Edged Swords are fascinating. These are traits like being “too blunt,” “too sensitive,” “too intense.” But dig deeper and you’ll often find a powerful flip side – honesty, empathy, passion. The work here is to manage them with care and celebrate what’s beautiful in them.
Secret Sauce
From there, we move into Secret Sauce – the creative sibling of Weakness Alchemy. This is less archaeological, more alchemical. It’s where you identify and celebrate what’s uniquely wonderful about you – your personal magic, your natural strengths, your voice.
At London Speech Workshop, we guide people through this process to help them stand in their full, authentic power. Because when you understand your offering, with all its brilliance, gaps, and quirks, impostor syndrome loses its grip.
Why? Because you’re no longer pretending. You’re no longer performing. You’re simply being you – with clarity, compassion, and confidence.
During the pandemic, I had my own reckoning with this. I took time to look under the bonnet. It was uncomfortable. There were some things I didn’t want to see. But what I found there wasn’t a monster – it was me. Flawed, human, learning. And valuable, even in the mess.
