Webinar Recap: How to Find and Win Your Dream Role

Background waves

At London Speech Workshop, we believe your career should be more than just a job. As Emma Serlin shared in our recent webinar:

“Your career takes up over half of your waking life, so finding work that aligns with your values and who you are isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for a fulfilled life.”

We were thrilled to host career coach Alice Stapleton and career strategy expert Graeme Jordan to discuss how to find clarity in your career, build a powerful CV, and ace your interviews.

Here’s a recap of the most valuable insights.

1. Start With Self-Discovery

Alice reminded us that many people apply for jobs without first understanding what they truly want:

“Clarity is everything. When you truly understand what makes you tick, you can build a career that feels meaningful, rather than just falling into the next role.”

She recommends exploring your values, strengths, interests, and ideal working environment. Tools such as the VIA Strengths survey or simply reflecting on what brings you joy can reveal powerful clues about the right career path.

2. Build a CV That Tells Your Story

Graeme emphasised the importance of treating your CV as your personal marketing tool:

“Every line of your CV should answer one question: why should they choose you?”

Instead of listing generic skills, focus on evidence and achievements. Craft a strong headline at the top of your CV that clearly positions you for the role, and follow it with a concise summary highlighting the value you bring.

3. Align With Company Values

One key thread running through the session was value alignment: ensuring your personal values match the company culture.

Do your research by exploring company mission statements, websites, and job specs to identify what matters most to them.

Emma shared that when applicants connect with London Speech Workshop’s core values of authenticity, kindness, and empowerment, they stand out instantly.

4. Prepare Like a Pro for Interviews

Graeme shared his approach to interviews:

  • Anticipate questions based on the job specification.
  • Use clear structures (like LSW’s V- STARR or problem-action-result) to keep answers focused.
  • Always bring answers back to why you’re the best fit.

Emma also reminded us that interviews are about people hiring people. Rapport, confidence, and authentic communication matter just as much as experience.

5. Key Takeaways

  • Be intentional: Don’t scatter-apply for jobs. Know what you want.
  • Lead with evidence: Highlight your moments of achievement, not just responsibilities.
  • Stay human: Use both your head and your heart; employers want to see the person behind the CV.

What’s Next?

If you’re ready to take the next step, start by identifying your top five values and reviewing your CV to ensure every line speaks to your strengths.
