We’ve compiled the 9 top tips from our expert panel, 3 from each speaker, to help you take your job search to the next level.
In our recent webinar, Emma Serlin – London Speech Workshop Founder, Alice Stapleton – Career Coach, and Graeme Jordan – CV Expert, shared their most practical advice on finding and winning a role you love.
Emma Serlin’s Top 3 Tips
1. Align Your Career With Your Values
Your career takes up a huge portion of your life. Emma urges job seekers to do the inner work to identify their core values and seek roles that align with them. As she said:
“Your career takes up over half of your waking life, so finding work that aligns with your values and who you are isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for a fulfilled life.”
2. Bring Both Your Head and Heart to the Interview
While preparation is vital, it’s equally important to connect on a human level. Employers hire people, not CVs. Show up authentically, engage with your interviewer, and build rapport.
3. Use “Moments of Brilliance” to Stand Out
Reflect on times when you felt proud of your achievements – these moments reveal your strengths, values, and unique personality. Weave these stories into your interview answers to make them memorable.
Alice Stapleton’s Top 3 Tips
1. Clarity Is Key
Alice stresses that clarity is the first step:
“Clarity is everything. When you truly understand what makes you tick, you can build a career that feels meaningful, rather than just falling into the next role.”
She recommends mapping out your values, interests, skills, and ideal work environment before applying for roles.
2. Do a 360° Assessment of Who You Are
Identify what motivates you, what gives you purpose, and what environments you thrive in.
Use tools like values assessments or simply reflect on what activities make you feel “in flow.”
3. Don’t Scatter-Apply
Alice warns against applying for every role you see.
Instead, focus your energy on roles and companies that align with your skills and values, tailoring your CV and approach for each.
Graeme Jordan’s Top 3 Tips
1. Every Line of Your CV Must Have a Purpose
Graeme recommends treating your CV like a marketing document:
“Every line of your CV should answer one question: why should they choose you?”
Cut out generic lists of skills, and instead showcase achievements and results.
2. Anticipate Interview Questions
Most interview questions are predictable. Prepare by reviewing the job specification and rehearsing structured answers to common questions. This preparation will make you confident and compelling.
3. Avoid the “Life Story” Trap
When answering questions like “Tell me about yourself,” don’t give your entire career history. Focus on your value proposition – the unique strengths and achievements that make you the best candidate.
Final Thoughts
These 9 tips offer a clear roadmap for job seekers:
- Do the inner work (values and self-discovery).
- Craft a CV that sells your achievements.
- Prepare structured, confident interview answers.
As Emma, Alice, and Graeme all highlighted, the key to success is alignment – knowing who you are, what you offer, and why it matters.
