How to Handle Presentation Disruptions with Confidence

Whether we like it or not, the worst can happen when giving a speech or important presentation, our body can behave in ways we really don’t want it to, and other people can also. As was the experience of our prime minister on her recent Tory Conference party speech when she was interrupted by not only her own coughing fit but also a heckler.

 

So what do we do when the stars misalign, and coughs and heckles make an appearance? Here are some top presentation skills tips to help you find the silver linings or at least, lessen the disruption.

 

 

Before The Speech

 

 

Be prepared

Make sure you have lozenges, tissues, water and cough syrup to hand, so if the cough appears, you have what you need to nip it in the bud.

 

 

Drink plenty

Before the speech you should be lubricating your vocal chords by drinking plenty of room temperature water. This will moisten the vocal folds and prevent the throat from drying. Cough syrups and hot drinks are also good. Lemon and honey is a particularly effective cough combatant. The lemon will cut through the congestion and the anti-septic properties of honey will soothe your throat.

 

 

Warm up

When your voice is tired or ragged is an absolute necessity. A simple yet effective exercise is to create an ‘Ng’ sound by saying “ing” and sustain it as you go up and down your vocal register. Notice when there is an almost ‘crackling’ sound and go over and around these with your voice. This will massage the vocal folds and help smooth out a croaky voice.

 

 

Highlight

Highlight your speech, literally, get a highlighter pen, and mark all the key words and phrases that you want to make ‘pop’ for your audience. This means during the speech, because you know what these key phrases are, you will be putting the effort in to get these ideas into your listeners’ head, meaning this extra bit of intention, focus and energy will easily bypass the effects of a tired voice, and get you heard where it counts.

 

 

During The Speech

 

 

Create intimacy

If your voice is tired and strained, don’t feel like the only way to make impact is to talk in a loud voice – it isn’t. Instead you can lower your tone, speak slower and quieter, and double the intensity, drawing people in so they sit forward to be part of the intimate circle you are creating. It takes intention, and eye contact, and really connecting to the audience, but can be done with a large group of people and is a fantastic way to counter a strained voice and make impact.

 

 

Use silence to your advantage

When our voices are strained we have to use other means available to make impact with our ideas. Pauses are perfect for just this. Take a pause before key ideas and phrases to tell the audience you are about to say something of importance. A well used pause will add weight and impact without any vocal effort.

 

 

Coughing fits happen

If you do find yourself coughing in the middle of a speech, accept that coughing fits happen. It is no reflection on your commitment, your integrity or skill as a communicator. Therefore do not let it take you down. Simply do what you can to help it pass, take the time you need, and let it be a blip in an otherwise great speech. If you handle it well people will forget about it and move on with you. If however you battle it out, then that it what they will ne watching. You, fighting with your cough, trying to speak, the cough winning… you get the picture. Not a pretty sight.

 

 

If interrupted- response is key

Don’t carry on as if its not happening. If you do this, the ‘story’ becomes the interaction between the interrupter and the interrupted pretending the interrupting is invisible. That little drama is going to be way more interesting than most speeches, so don’t try and compete – just nip the drama in the bud quickly. By acknowledging the interruption, responding and then moving on you can show that you are unscripted and adaptive. It also demonstrates a human element which is very important.

 

 

Remember, with any unforeseen circumstances that come up during a speech, as unwelcome as they feel, they can offer an opportunity to show another side of you, responsive or humble, gracious, witty, accepting, calm. So next time you are confronted with the ‘worst’ see if you can turn it round, and make it a time to connect even more with your audience. Letting them see more of who you really are. They will like you all the more for it.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for coaches who combine technical skill with emotional intelligence and genuine warmth.

You will likely have:

  • 4+ years’ experience in communication coaching, teaching, or related fields
  • A background in voice, communication, performance, or coaching
  • Excellent listening skills and a strong ear for nuance
  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to build trust quickly
  • A natural ability to connect, empower, and bring out the best in others
  • A genuine passion for communication and personal development

Desirable (but not essential):

  • MA in Voice Studies, Communication, or similar
  • Understanding of phonetics
  • Experience in Accent Softening

  • Minimum 2+ years coaching, teaching, or facilitation experience
  • Background in communication, voice, performance, or related field
  • Availability for 16+ hours per week (including some evenings/weekends)
  • Availability to attend training in September

We operate across B2B (corporate programmes) and B2C (individual coaching via online purchase), and are entering an exciting phase of growth across both.

The Role

This is a broad, hands-on role owning the full financial function of the business — with scope to act as a strategic partner to the leadership team.

You’ll move between detail and big picture: ensuring everything runs smoothly day-to-day, while helping us understand performance, improve profitability, and make confident financial decisions.

Working Setup

  • 3–4 days per week (flexible)
  • Remote-first
  • One full day in the Farringdon office every fortnight (Tuesday or Thursday)

What You’ll Own

1. Financial Operations 

  • Daily bookkeeping in Xero across B2B and B2C
  • Payroll preparation and reconciliation
  • Credit control and client invoicing
  • Bank reconciliation and payment tracking
  • Managing accounts payable and receivable
  • Maintaining clean, accurate financial records with minimal oversight
  • Liaising with external accountants (year-end, VAT, tax)
  • Payroll preparation and reconciliation including pension submissions and auto enrolment 

2. Reporting, Compliance & Cashflow

  • Monthly management reporting (P&L, summaries, insights)
  • VAT returns and tax coordination
  • Monthly cashflow forecast
  • Clear visibility on cash position, risks, and liabilities
  • The production and maintenance of annual budgets, with regular forecasting and variance reporting

3. Commercial Insight & Strategy

  • Provide financial clarity to support decision-making
  • Translate numbers into clear, actionable insight
  • Help ensure revenue growth aligns with profitability

4. Business Modelling & Analysis

  • Analyse B2C performance (pricing, discounting, utilisation)
  • Model coach capacity, hiring decisions, and revenue potential
  • Support development of B2B commercial models (e.g. retainers, larger contracts)
  • Build simple financial models to guide strategic decisions

5. Cost & Efficiency

  • Review cost base and identify inefficiencies or savings
  • Recommend leaner ways of operating
  • Explore automation/AI opportunities where relevant

6. Incentives & Performance Metrics

  • Support design of:
    • Coach incentive structures
    • Bonus and profit-share models
  • Model key metrics such as:
    • Customer lifetime value (LTV)
    • Cost of sales
    • Utilisation and capacity

Who You Are

  • A qualified accountant ( ACA/ACCA/CIMA)
  • 3+ years in a bookkeeping / finance role
  • Strong Xero proficiency (non-negotiable)
  • Experience with payroll, VAT, and reconciliations
  • Comfortable owning the day-to-day finance function independently
  • Commercially minded — you go beyond reporting
  • Strong organisational and admin skills
  • Clear, warm communicator
  • Proactive problem-solver who anticipates needs
  • Experience supporting founders or small teams is a plus

The Role

This is not a purely strategic role. You’ll be deep in the detail; building funnels, shaping messaging, testing ideas, and driving performance, while leading a Marketing Manager and managing freelancers, agencies, and partners.

One morning you’re sketching a landing page wireframe. That afternoon you’re coaching your manager or reviewing PPC performance. You’re as comfortable in the data as you are in a creative brief.

What You’ll Own

Growth & Funnel Performance

  • Own the full funnel: awareness → lead → nurture → conversion
  • Build and optimise landing pages, journeys, and conversion flows
  • Run continuous testing (CRO, A/B, messaging) to improve performance

Paid & Performance Marketing

  • Own strategy and results across PPC (Google, Meta, LinkedIn, YouTube)
  • Manage agencies and freelancers — setting direction and pushing for better ROI
  • Allocate budget based on data, not instinct

Campaigns, Content & Execution

  • Plan and deliver campaigns across email, organic, paid, and partnerships
  • Shape high-converting landing pages, lead magnets, and email sequences
  • Ensure all content is on-brand: intelligent, warm, human, and impactful

Data, Team & Systems

  • Be obsessed with metrics: conversion, CAC, LTV, engagement
  • Own HubSpot (or similar): automation, segmentation, reporting
  • Manage and develop a Marketing Manager; brief and oversee designers and developers

Who You Are

  • 6–10+ years in growth and performance marketing
  • Have owned PPC and know what “good” looks like
  • Have built funnels and campaigns yourself — not just directed them
  • Confident with HubSpot, Figma/Canva, and analytics platforms
  • Strong copy instincts and an eye for conversion
  • Commercially sharp, driven by results not vanity metrics
  • Genuinely curious about people, behaviour, and what makes communication work
