Meet Owen – Our Client Logistics Executive, and the person behind ensuring our corporate clients have a seamless experience throughout their workshops with us.
This week, we sat down with him to talk through his role at London Speech Workshop, what fuels his love for impactful communication, and his top advice for people looking to transform their communication…
1. What led you to work in communication training?
I joined London Speech Workshop as an intern, straight out of university where I studied History. My dissertation was on the importance of emotions in diplomacy, and how successfully communicating them was often the deciding factor for peace and prosperity.
I immediately clicked with the team at LSW, finding their mission and values of authenticity, empowerment and kindness strongly aligned with my own.
It was from here I was offered a graduate position as the Logistics Executive for LSW Teams, and the rest is history (again)!
2. Tell us more about your role at London Speech Workshop.
As the Client Logistics Executive, I am responsible for arranging the fine details of our corporate workshops. This means ensuring all i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed, and that the whole experience is seamless end to end. A lot goes into a workshop beside the delivery of our stellar coaches.
3. How does the London Speech Workshop approach feel different to other professional environments?
Although this is my professional role since graduating, and I don’t have much experience in other environments, it is immediately obvious that what LSW offers is something really special.
Values are integrated across the entire business, from the back office, to the workshops with our clients. The team is kind, authentic, and there is little in the way of a “corporate mask”, as honesty is encouraged.
4. What is your favourite London Speech Workshop memory so far?
While there have been many highlights, passing my probation review tops the list for me!
This concluded my first 3 months of full time employment and marked the end of me being the junior, newly-graduated, novice.
Now, as an asset to the team, hearing how others genuinely appreciate me in my role, and thinking about what lies ahead in the future, is inspiring and exciting to say the least.
5. Why is great communication important to you?
Effective communication is often dismissed as a “soft skill” and therefore trivial to professional development but the consequences of ineffective communication is rarely so.
Studying History made me realise it can break iron-clad alliances, start war, send individuals into poverty. Meanwhile, effective communication can make unlikely friendships, ensure peace and give rise to lasting prosperity.
Personally, words have always been my ally. Whether I am looking to make friends or find myself backed into a corner. If I am struggling with something, I write it down and the problem solves itself.
Then, I find a good conversation is 10x more effective than an energy drink! You can leave a conversation with someone feeling so uplifted or so inspired, in a way that is really hard to replicate.
6. Tell us about a time that really inspired how you communicate today.
As part of my onboarding into London Speech Workshop, I was invited to a taster session with one of our coaches, Christine.
While being fairly skilled at speaking with previous communication training, the transformation in my cadence, pace, gravitas and colour was profound.
Doubly so was her advice on speaking off the cuff, much of which I still implement in how I speak today. It was a really inspiring and transformational experience for me.
7. What do you love doing outside of London Speech Workshop?
In my free time I am keen to stay physically and mentally sharp, thriving on the feeling of overcoming limitations.
I run even though I am heavy-footed, completing the Barcelona Marathon earlier this year.
I practice JiuJitsu despite struggling with choreography, recently competing in a national competition.
I suppose I’m into type-2 fun: activities that are challenging and even uncomfortable in the moment, but feel rewarding and enjoyable in retrospect.
8. And finally, what advice would you give to anyone looking to start communication coaching?
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, where better to start than a taster session with us!
