Case Study
Liz is an editor whose role has increasingly moved in front of the camera. Hosting podcasts, webinars and roundtables, and most recently hosting and speaking at international conferences. Work she enjoys, but which asked more of her spoken confidence than she’d needed before.
Liz came to LSW knowing exactly where her edge was. She was assured one-on-one and in small groups, but a room of 100 to 150 people was a different proposition. What she wanted was to own the stage, to believe in herself in front of a crowd, and to trust that the right word would fall into her mouth at exactly the right moment.
There was a quality question in there too. A warm person by nature, she’d come across the idea of the warmth and competence ratio, and recognised that while the warmth came easily, she wanted to dial up the competence, and to learn how to speak off the cuff, with authority, when it mattered most.
Liz came to LSW on a colleague’s recommendation. He’d trained with the workshop before and seen real results, which is why she trusted them, and why her company did too.
She worked with her coach, Catherine, across two separate blocks for two separate events. Together they worked out what the real blocks were, not only for public speaking but for speaking in a business environment, and made sure Liz knew her place was among these people, that she could stand alongside them and deliver.
The work turned out to be far wider ranging than learning to give a speech. One particular shift stayed with her. At the start she was confident in what she was saying but monotone, missing the ups and downs, the inflections, the bits that bring personality to the table. That was exactly what the training helped her find.
Liz noticed progress quickly, and over those two blocks she got to where she needed to be. She could speak more calmly, in a more measured way, trusting that she knew what to say and when to say it.
The benefits reached well beyond the stage. Better in meetings, better at articulating what she thought and felt, more careful about how she communicated across all sorts of situations. And the moment that meant the most: writing, memorising and delivering a ten-minute speech she never believed she could give, and giving it well. She is, quite rightly, very proud of herself.
I would certainly recommend it to anyone who needs to speak or communicate for their role. If putting your ideas forward better would help you in your job, this is definitely for you. It’s great for confidence, and great for helping you find your place and find your voice.
